Vanilla Ice, Salt N Pepa To Perform at Kankakee BBQ Fest

Musical artists Vanilla Ice and Salt N Pepa will perform this Friday, July 10, 2015 at the Kankakee Valley Park District's BBQ Fest.  Salt N Pepa are scheduled to perform at 9:00 p.m. and Vanilla Ice takes the stage at 10:30 p.m..

The event takes place at River Road Park, which is near Kankakee Community College.  

For full schedule of events, map, costs and more info, check out the Park District's page, here.  Also, considering the unpredictable weather, I would check with the Park District on the day of the event to make sure it is still going to happen.

2015 Thee Olde Time Farm Show Cancelled Due to Excessive Rain

According to a post on its website and Facebook page, The Olde Time Farm Show has been cancelled for 2015 due to excessive rain.  The ground at the park is saturated and cannot support tractors.

June 2015 has been the wettest June on record in the history of the State of Illinois.

Kankakee High School Students Returning Gazebo to Letterman Featured on This American Life

After Kankakee was listed as the worst metropolitian area to live by the Places Rated Almanac, talk show host David Letterman picked up the story, airing a "Top Ten List" of sarcastic ways to market Kankakee.  Letterman continued the "joke", sending Kankakee two gazebos to "help". 

When a group of Kankakee High School students heard the story, they decided the gazebos and the negativity attached to them were not something they wanted to see in their city.  The students tore down a gazebo and used the wood to build a rocking chair for David Letterman.

This American Life, a radio show produced by Chicago's Public Radio Station WBEZ, interviewed the students for a story on the program's 554th Episode: Not It!.  This American Life Producer Brian Reed spoke with the students in Kankakee, then spent time in Bradley and Bourbonnais, exploring the attitudes toward Kankakee of people in the more surburban towns.  It's fascinating to hear an outsider's take on Kankakee, both the more racially diverse city and the less racially diverse county.
